For my discussion this week, I will focus on how the National Breast Cancer Foundation utilizes social media platforms such as YouTube and Pintrest to raise awareness. The National Breast Cancer Foundation’s “mission is to help women now by providing help and inspiring hope to those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education and support services”. They also provide free mammograms to women in need and don’t have very good health care. The National Breast Cancer Foundation partners with medical facilities across the country to provide free mammograms and diagnostic breast care services to “underserved women through the NBCF National Mammography Program. In addition, the NBCF National Mammography Program requires that medical facilities within our network have the capacity to continue treatment after an abnormal finding or diagnosis of breast cancer”. Because it is national breast cancer awareness month, they have been advertising like crazy about supporting breast cancer research and to encourage women to regularly checked. If you were to go to Youtube, the ads you may come across before your video plays is about breast cancer and how this month is all about ‘Pink’ and trying to raise awareness. The National Breast Cancer Foundation also utilizes Pinterest as well. They ‘pin’ pictures of survivors and clothing they sell. People who have a Pinterest account can ‘re-pin’ these pictures- therefore spreading the word about breast cancer awareness and how any person willing, can make a donation to help out the cause. I feel as if the National Breast Cancer Foundation does a great job at using these two social media platforms in order to spread their work and raise money for the cause. Two articles I found were “Love in Motion”- which is an article about how the National Breast Cancer Foundation uses Youtube ads and videos to raise awareness. Another article I found was “Helping Women Now”- which speaks about how the National Breast Cancer Foundation uses its social media platform to their full advantage, and about how well planned out their social media strategies are; because, in Youtube and Pinterest, if one person ‘likes’ or ‘pins’ something, it pops up on another persons homepage – and the cycle continues.
