Being an emergency medical aid, it is hard to plan out what goes on their social media any more than a week in advance, but even though they are limited, Doctors without Borders, or MSF, still finds a way to effectively and creatively engage their audience and efficiently send a message. What I really thought was interesting with Doctors without Borders, or MSF, was the emphasis they put on their Instagram. They use it as a means of awareness. They focus on the work and their teams in the work field, in order to relay messages and images back to us about their successes. Their main focus is the patients, but they believe the audience back in their respective countries should be involved too. Doctors Without Borders want to be able to show the change they are making and where their donator’s money is actually going. They have specialized photographers who work in the field where they are helping, who then send the images back to headquarters, where they are put into a media date base and strategically chosen by Nick Owen, then uploaded to Instagram. Nick realizes that bombarding their audience with too many images defeats the purpose, however. It becomes overwhelming, and backfires on their main goal, which is not only to inform, but also tell a story. So, this is when they take Pinterest into account. Instead of over powering one social media site with images, they divide it up, which I think is extremely smart and could contribute to their social media success in the future. Both sites use visual representation, but Instagram is more of an update, while Pinterest is more of a guide.
Doctors without Borders is put into a tough position when it comes to planning what to post on social media platforms in advance. They could be faced with a disaster tomorrow and would have to drop everything to go help the people in need. However, they still manage to sustain their social media accounts, and do a good job at that. They have a specialized photographer for their instagram account who allows them to post the most emotional and powerful images possible. They appeal to their audience and receive a great number of likes. When images hit and audience hard, they are more emotionally connected with their organization, and more willing to help out. Doctors without Borders also separates their images into two different social media websites, refraining from over whelming their audience and using each site as a different means of communication.
