The one organization that stood out to me the most between the two in the Google Hangouts this week was Charity: Water. It was said in the beginning of the web chat that Charity: Water really is one of the best, well-developed brands of the nonprofits to date, mainly through their use of social media.
The thing that popped out the most about Charity: Water that Paull Young mentioned was their strategy- do it differently. They do this through considering of the hearts and minds of donors instead of always being about their money. Charity: Water wants to give back to their donors, and build and maintain a long term relationships with them through inspiring them. The organization inspires donors specifically through their content. This idea alone is what I believe sets Charity: Water apart from other non-profit organizations.
But their story goes much further than just that. Charity: Water has a 100 percent model, which guarantees donors that every dollar of their donation is going toward a water project. The organization also proves this through marking projects with GPS tracking so donors can check in on projects they are donating to. Paull Young said that Charity: Water has an algorithm that allows this to happen. I believe that this transparency with donors really is what creates loyalty and long term relationships with donors.
Another thing that makes Charity: Water and their strategy special is that they don’t need to spend any money on advertising to promote their campaigns through social media. They are completely aware of the power of word of mouth, through their donors, employees, volunteers, and just people who are a fan of the organization. An example Paull mentioned was that he asked his family and friends to donate $31 or $310 towards Charity: Water for his 31st birthday. Paull believes that the people he knows would not do this if they did not feel inspired by Charity: Water, because people do powerful things if they feel inspired.
Across Charity: Water’s social media platforms you can definitely see that their followers are following them for a reason. This organization has done a fantastic job working with their followers on social media. Paull Young said that Charity: Water tries to give back to donors and their followers by inspiring them through the content they post on the organization’s social media platforms. One way that their instagram page shows this is that they post pictures daily that tells the story of someone the organization has helped out, which is definitely inspiring to those who donated. It gives back a face to the people who donated to help those in need.
