This week on Google Hangout, we had the privilege to meet Paul Young, the digital director for Charity Water. Charity Water is a nonprofit organization who works to supply developing countries clean, safe drinking water. In a country like the united states it is difficult to really imagine what it would be like to be truly thirsty and if we are it's as simple as flipping on the spigot or driving to a Casco where you could fill a whole truck full of water if needed. For others in third world countries it's more of a question of if they can make the journey to the nearest water source and if so will it even be safe enough to drink?
However, Charity Water's goal isn't to only supply those in need with water, but to also find new ways to raise money for their cause. To raise money and awareness, this non-profit organization has two methods to do just that. One is through creating inspiration instead of guilting people into donating. Through inspiration, they are able to stimulate people to feel for those in need, then to do something creative to help. To keep donators interested they work towards building a relationship by keeping them updated on where their money is being used, campaigns going, and any other events going on no matter how much or how little money they gave.
Another unique tactic for raising money and awareness is through their give up a birthday donations. Everyone loves receiving birthday presents and money, but after a certain age some don't feel it as necessary to be spoiled with gifts that they may never use. So why not do something for someone else with all that extra money? Through give a birthday you can sign up and make it so family and friends can send their money to Charity Water that they would have spent on you for your birthday. By doing this, you are not only raising hundreds of dollars for those in need but also getting more people involved with the cause. What better birthday present is there than one that you can help someone else?
Social media such as Instagram and Facebook Charity Water is able keep those involved on activity. However, it's through creativity, inspiration, and a long lasting relationship with their donors, and reaching out by word of mouth that Charity Water is able to expand even more.
