Habitat for humanity is a non- profit organization that is dedicated to building small affordable homes for less privileged people in the community. They also provide appliances, furniture and other used necessities to locals. Habitat for humanity is run out of warehouses in major cities but is an international organization all together (Habitat). Each affiliate and national office is an independently run, nonprofit organization. They coordinate all aspects of Habitat home building in their local area, including fundraising, building site selection, partner family selection and support, house construction, and mortgage servicing. Since they were established in 1976, they have moved their local based interactions onto a global platform where many people can feel the impact of their efforts (About). The trend for nonprofits is turning the social media experience into a visual one. The benefit for non-profits, of course, is that these “cool” pictures can be used to build awareness for your cause. The mission statement of Habitat for Humanity is "Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope (Habitat)”.
Habitat for Humanity has over 6,000 followers and over 200 posts. They have done a great job using word of mouth and testimonials to build their organization. I have actually volunteered for this non profit organization when I was in high school and I found out about them from a friend who regularly volunteers. I have first hand experience on just how helpful an organization like this can be helpful to a community. The warehouse sold a number of appliances necessary to a functioning household at just a fraction of the price. While it is a busy atmosphere to be apart of, the teamwork and cooperation was a tremendous example of community building. Platforms like Instagram and Pinterest are just more awesome ways to get the community involved. These social media outlets allow you to show the world who you are and what you do. Captivating pictures can be worth a thousand words and with the use of hashtags and linking your accounts together (6). It can also help your audience connect with people who share similar interests as well as connecting with the organizations and its practices.
When comparing an organization like Habitat for humanity, a more localized initiative, to an organization like Charity Water, a global effort with much momentum; there is several differences that can be pointed out. Charity Water has a very clear cut mission: “We're bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in need around the world.” It is impactful to see people absolutely ecstatic over clean water and for most people this alone will provoke them to contribute to the cause. Water is something most americans have easy access too. It is hard to imagine a world where it isn’t tangible. This organization has gained momentum off of that alone. Compared to Habitat for humanity, where housing, something much harder to provide, is actually being provided; yet on a smaller scale. \
