For this assignment I chose to do Charity Water, as I had never heard of it before and wanted to do further research on this noteworthy cause. Charity Water was founded in 2006 by Scott Harrison with a mission to bring clean, safe drinking water to developing countries. What I found admirable about Harrison is that he was a club promoter for 10 years and in 2004 he devoted 2 years of his life to the poor and marginalized volunteering in Liberia through the Mercy Ships.
They have numerous social media websites but the ones that stood out to me most were Twitter and Instagram. On Twitter they have arranged events which is a fascinating idea. They have campaigns such as #SeptemberCampaign which is a unique way to gather attention and to raise funds for their cause. Their Twitter is so successful because they use great quality images that really captivate what their mission is for. The images they provide have women carrying huge containers to gather water, what dirty versus clean water looks like, and children enjoying or playing in fresh water. A picture is really worth a thousand words as inadvertently these pictures are a slight guilt trip and pull at the emotional strings at every person’s heart. When looking at how hard the people in developing countries have to work for their water, it really puts everything into perspective and realize how fortunate people with access are. This is a great way to raise funds and awareness for their cause of bringing clean water to 3rd world countries.
Charity Water’s Instagram account is beautiful, and is a great example of what every account should look like. The images are bright and captivating, while they filter through images at the top. Their Instagram has just a little over 1000 images but has over 227,000 followers. The number aspect is amazing, they certainly have an amazing following and people do love what they do. That is what sets them apart from other non-profits we have researched and what makes them special in what they do. In order to secure donations sponsors, and public notice you have to have a following and a good media presence. The pictures they post I think are the highest quality and while they share a sad story, the colors and scenery that Charity Water uses someone seems to make it less of a tragedy than what it really is.
