In this course I learned a lot about how social media can be used to help spread awareness within healthcare and issues around the world. It was cool to see how the different platforms such as Instagram can be so popular for some organizations while others are still getting used to different strategies. I think working with non-profits helped to realize how much effort people put into to caring for others for barely any pay. I thought that one of the most beneficial parts was the interactive social media engagement via Twitter and Instagram. I think it helped to keep everyone engaged with up to date global health concerns, especially the ebola crisis. I also think that being assigned to tweet everyday was important for connecting with others in the course. This was also helpful while engaging with professionals as well.
The Google hangouts were also a great aspect of the course. Each hangout was different but all together they shared somewhat of a similar approach to social media whether they had achieved successful strategies or not. I also believe that the hangouts were important to show an outside perspective to all from a professional standpoint as many of us will be in a similar type of field. The hangouts were also effective in bringing different perspectives on social media strategies in the non-profit world. Some of the conflicting messages and the results of different strategies were interesting to contrast with another.
The workload was more than I expected but I think it was just enough to keep up with if you stayed on point. I would probably change the number of discussions as they were a bit much at times. I really enjoyed learning about how much effort is put into helping other people through non-profits and to see the work we did as a class to help our clients!
