I actually had a really wonderful experience in this course, overall. I feel as though I learned a lot about non-profits as well finding out about new non-profits I’d never heard of from the other people in the class through the discussion posts. The Google Hangouts were incredible. It was so useful to get to get a front row seat into what these social media professionals were doing at such well-known non-profits. Moreover, it really boosted my confidence about what they were telling us that they treated the course and the students with respect and importance.
I also enjoyed keeping updated on global health and learning about new issues related to global health that I had never heard of before. I have actually been following the Ebola situation since July so I was used to following that story but I liked getting a multitude of perspectives on it. I felt that the class gave me a few more ways to keep current on important world news and I deeply appreciated that.
I found the experience with the team most challenging of all. I often found it was hard to keep in contact with the people in my group. Only half of our group ended up joining the Facebook group we had set up to keep in contact. Even beyond that, sometimes it seemed to me that some members of my group were somewhat lost about what exactly they were supposed to be doing and I struggled with both trying to do my work and help them.
Going forward, there definitely are technical tools- like Canva.com- and social media measurement tools that I have bookmarked and will absolutely make use of going forward. I think, though, that the most important thing that I will carry with me from this class are not tools but confidence. At the beginning of the course, the idea that I would have to campaign for a non-profit on social media was stressful. As the class progressed, through the Google Hangouts and through getting a better sense of World Pediatric Project, I actually started to feel like campaigning for the non-profit was something I might have the skills to do without failing spectacularly or embarrassing the organization
