After completing this course, I have a much better understanding of how valuable social media can be to global health. It was eye-opening for me to see how so many people have already successfully used social media to spread awareness about disease, correct false rumors, and raise funds to do a variety of things such as perform operations or research possible cures. I also really enjoyed the opportunity to help think of ways to develop a social media strategy for a non-profit organization. I also learned a lot about the different ways an organization can engage with the online community and reach such a multitude of people and areas at once.
I would say that the hardest part of the class was finding a way to coordinate 6 people’s ideas into one paper without really ever meeting in person until the very end. I feel as if my group did a good job of overcoming this challenge however, and produced a well-structured and carefully thought out social media strategy. Learning how to work with people that you have never seen over the internet is one of the valuable skills I will take away from this course. In addition, I also know how to approach social media strategies and campaigns in a more efficient way. This will likely be important to me as an advertising major because when it comes down to it, advertising can take the form of any media. I think that at some point throughout my career I will likely have to work with social media again so it feels good to know that I wont be blindly approaching it when the time comes.
I look forward to learning more about how social media can improve the presence of a variety of brands and organizations instead of focusing just on non-profit health related organizations. I do believe that the impact social media is having on global health is the most valuable use for social media thus far however.
