I think this course is unique and a great opportunity for any mass communications major to participate in. Unlike some people that I’ve spoken with, I kind of enjoyed the social media engagement activities and making new accounts just for the class. I learned a lot through Twitter and Instagram about the health care sector of the work force and also was informed about a variety of trending health issues. A lot of my tweets that I either posted or quoted were about the Ebola crisis since it seemed to become a trending topic right around the beginning of this class and then escalated as time progressed and cases in the United States arose.
The main things that were challenging were primarily with the group portions of the class. Engagement was tough on some days just because when you have other classes, homework, and other obligations during the week the Twitter and Instagram usage would sometimes slip my mind. Even though it was rigorous having to do the engagement every day for six weeks it makes me feel relieved that I was able to push through and finish out the class without missing any of the assignments.
As for the group portion, it was tough at times to communicate and try to get everyone to do their fair share of work. I think the outline of the project helped us to get organized but with midterms and other activities going on it was difficult finding the right times to work collaboratively. I think the only portion of the class that could be improved would have to be the group project because I feel like the deadline was a little too soon for a project that would actually be sent to a non-profit organization for use. If we wanted to look as professional as possible when sending these reports, more time to edit and revise our project would have been essential.
Other than that, I had fun with this class and am looking forward to any other mass communications opportunities in the future.
