During my time in this course I have learned a lot about social media and non-profit organizations as well. Being able to use social media sites such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook etc. for a course was amazing to me initially. Then I started to realize the difference between using social media for pure social purposes to utilizing it for business.
I am grateful to have had the pleasure of creating a social media campaign for the World Pediatric Project while in this course. It was challenging because creating a social media strategy and campaign was something I have never done before or seen. Being able to work with the other members of my group and hear their insight was very helpful. I am thankful for the requirement to create a social media campaign because I was able to research and learn more behind social media and how it is used as a fundraising tool, and promotion for an organization. By simply using pictures, links, and hash tags it amazed me how non-profit organizations were able to bring visibility to the work that they were doing, and the goals of their programs.
Without this class I probably would have never known about the many health organizations especially non-profits that are around the world. Watching the weekly Google hangouts was the best and most informative part about the course. While watching I was able to learn more about organizations such as Doctors without Borders UK, Charity Water, and many more on their strategies for engaging followers. It amazed me how non-profits such as charity water were able to raise money and followers based on their social media engagement on platforms such as twitter. They do not beg their followers for funds, they simply show the work they do, and people are willing to support.
One big challenge for me during this course was getting together with my group. It was difficult initially to get everyone together at a synchronized time to work on the project due to time conflicts. I think that the amount of workload for the group should be minimized for this course just because it is online. Overall I enjoyed taking this course, and found it very insightful.
