In my experience within the Global Health & Social Media class, honestly, everything happened so fast that I wish it could have lasted a little longer than just 6 weeks. Some of the challenges that I faced was the workload the time allotted weekly. For example, I had a struggle at the beginning getting used to the requirements as it pertained to the weekly tweets and Instagram posts, mainly because I was unsure of what was acceptable to post and what would be considered as credit. I know that I have posted on both Twitter and Instagram and received no credit for the week. Another challenge for me was connected with my group members.
A suggestion I would add for the next time this course if offered is the allow us an option of doing a group project or an individual assignment. I know that I personally do not like group projects because someone always slacks and it is hard to be graded for group work. I think that allowing us the option of an individual assignment would allow the instructor and teaching assistants to see our individual work ethnic. As a graduating senior having no experience with global health, a weekly quiz, 300 word paper, daily social media posting, & group work was just a bit much for a six-week course.
A few things that I did enjoy about this course were the Google Hangouts from our special guests because they gave a wonderful perspective of their respective organizations that I would have never known about beforehand. I think my favorite was Charity Water. I admire their work because they are the epitome of how global awareness is created and supported all through social media. As a young aspiring business owner, I can definitely draw from some of their tips on who to make people care about what you care about.
Overall, I am glad I took this course, because I was able to enhance my knowledge of various global health issues and how we can use social media to bring forth awareness, however I do feel that the course should be longer in time to allot for adequate and more effective course material.
