I thought that it was a great concept that the culmination of our work, all we have learned about social media and global health we end up with an actual social media strategy for a non profit. The organizations definitely have benefitted from our projects with all the things we have been posting on social media throughout the weeks. I particularly enjoyed working with my group because everyone was so knowledgable in the social media aspect that I was able to gain a lot of knowledge through my teammates. I also like how my group decided to delegate the sections and make sure we had everything covered while working through google docs. I liked doing research for our assigned non profit because I thought they were a great organization and was glad to try and help improve how they could go about organizing and creating their social media strategy.
The google hangouts were great ways to supplement the lectures and have what was said in the lectures be applied to applicable situations in real work world. I enjoyed having the variety of non profits. For example, Nick Owen was one of five people on a team for social media whereas Amber Webb and Anna Baker were the only ones who were employed for social media so you can see the difference between how each non profit delegates time and money to those positions and were also able to see the differences from an inside view of each company which I found very neat.
I thought the lectures were very informative and had a lot of information that I was able to take from them and start a good strategy for Preemptive Love Coalition. I like how we used twitter as a means for questions for the class and as a way to connect with our fellow classmates. I felt instagram was a fun tool to have for our non profit organization and I definitely had friends ask me about the organization and what I was doing them for because it caught their attention. That shows how effective social media can be for a non profit, when I am only posting two pictures a week but having multiple friends ask how they can get involved and how they can learn more about the organization.
Coming into this class I had very little background on social media compared to other I think. I didn’t even have a twitter but now I have taken away a vast amount of knowledge on social media and how it can affect global health in an incredibly positive way. I’ve always been interested in the health field but this class sparked my interest in the social media side of things and I will continue to pursue this new interest.
