When I first joined this course, I didn’t know what to expect. I had no clue what I was coming into and the only thing I knew about this class was when my advisor told me “Oh, I think you’ll really enjoy this class.”
As soon as we finished the first week of class, I absolutely loved it. I love the concept of students helping non-profit organizations through a class, and the fact that we did it through social media was truly amazing to me. Because of this class, it has sparked a new yearning to learn as much as I can about social media and I’m really interested in specializing in it (I would love to take the class that Professor Messner is offering for Seniors, but I don’t have any research experience).
The most challenging thing for me in this course was the daily tweeting and posting on Instagram. Instagram was easier for me to do because I use it daily, but I can be forgetful at times. Twitter was definitely new to me because I’ve never used Twitter before so the concept of bitly and being restricted to only using a certain amount of characters was a bit difficult but I got the hang of it quickly. But the same thing with posting on Instagram, I can be forgetful at times so I would occasionally forget to post.
Another difficulty for me was the number of assignments due each week and the amount of time you needed to devote to this class. But this is more catered to me because I have a heavy course load this semester and when I first signed up for this class I didn’t realize it was a six-week class. I understand that because this is only six weeks long that we are going to have a lot of assignments due each week, and once I got the hang of things I was able to keep up with my assignments. I did fall a little behind in my other classes though!
What I got most out of this class was how to use social media for organization. The final report that we did really helped me get insights on different social media platforms and how to be successful with them. I think this is a major thing that will help me throughout the future.
