In terms of social media usage, I was familiar with Facebook, Pinterest and Tumblr before this semester– but this course has successfully introduced me to two huge social media platforms that I had been avoiding for the longest time: Twitter and Instagram. I think that the skills I learned in each lecture of how to effectively use each of these platforms will help me in the future. Also, having to use both Twitter and Instagram on a regular basis gave me insight to how difficult it would be to be in charge of any company's social media/networking maintenance. I did also find out about social media management programs, like Oktopost, that could be of help to that responsibility.
The most challenging part of the course was coordinating with team members for the group project and presentation (although I'm happy we really pulled it off in the end, go Team 3!). Because the class is completely online and we have no designated meeting time, using Google Docs, Facebook and email was huge in completing any team assignments over the course of the class. This will be an incredibly useful skill for the future, as I'm sure I'll be collaborating on projects with people that I may never get a chance to meet in person. Another challenge was the heavy demands of the course due to its six week timeline. Although I am relieved that our team completed the strategy report and presentation, I can't help but think how much more developed the whole project might have been given a later deadline.
Google+ Hangouts were another big part of the class that I had never had experience with in the past. It was great being able to engage with guest lecturers/nonprofit communications professionals.
What I most appreciated about this class is that it was very experimental. We all ran into technical difficulties and challenges during the course, but were able to adapt to necessary changes and developments. For instance, the initial discussion forum caused some problems, but I found the new forum to be a lot more effective. It was interesting to see these things unfold in an online course.
