Over these past six weeks, not only did I learn a lot about the field of public relations, I learned many valuable lessons including time management, and working with an online group to complete a large project. Unlike many public relations classes I have taken at VCU, one of the aspects of this class I really enjoyed is the interaction via the Google Hangouts with real pr professionals. After hearing them speak, I learned many real life scenarios and strategies of public relations, rather than just reading about them in a textbook. Overall, I think hearing professionals from the public relations sector of nonprofit organizations will really benefit later on in life; because they shared with us what works in the real world, and what does not. Another benefit from the class was the group project. Although the process could be a pain at times, now that it is complete and turned in, I can say that interacting with a group in an online class to organize and complete a very important assignment is definitely an occurrence I may encounter in the future. Also, this class had many deadlines for the various assignments, including quizzes, social media engagements, and discussion posts. Many times during the week, it was hard to keep up and remember all the assignments that were due, or even just remembering to tweet or Instagram each day. This class was definitely good practice of juggling a heavy work load along with other classes and outside engagements. Not only was this good practice for future classes at VCU, but juggling due dates and deadlines in an online setting is good practice for a future in public relations.
Although the work load had its benefits, I will admit that I thought the requirements from this class were a little on the heavy side. I did not know what to expect when starting this class and it was very tough to get acclimated in the beginning, due to having begun this class after a few weeks into my other classes. Nevertheless, I got a lot out of this course, and really enjoyed learning about various nonprofit organizations, as well as putting myself in the shoes of a public relations specialist by coming up with a social media and fundraising strategy for them.
