I think I learned a great deal from this course. I definitely honed and further developed many of my communication skills and learned many tools with regards to social media and boosting follower engagement with content, which will help me down the road. I plan to attend grad school at VCU for multimedia journalism and become a visual journalist (photojournalist to be specific) and I will definitely make use of the knowledge I gained while doing research for my campaign for World Pediatric Project, such as how to get readers to engage with multimedia on various social media sites and what I learned expanding my knowledge of what kind of photos and design elements are most likely to grab someone's attention.
Outside of the campaign I completed with my group, I also learned a lot from the weekly assigments. Tweeting daily on global health issues required me to follow along with world news about global health, and since this class coincided with the ebola epidemic, I learned a lot about what was going on with ebola throughout the world and what the CDC was doing to combat it. I learned about why a vaccine doesn't exist and why treatment isn't currently feasible. In general, my eyes were opened to a lot of aspects of global health that I had never previously heard about or considered.
When it came to the reflections and discussion assignments, I learned about why non-profits create certain campaigns (such as the Komen Walk for the Cure), why they're effective or why they aren't, and how public perception ties into all of this. I also got to hear a lot of interesting opinions from my fellow students in the course and read the feedback they left on my discussions, which often opened my eyes to new aspects of what I had talked about that I hadn't previously considered.
I learned a great deal from the Google Hangouts about non-profits, especially local ones, and was delighted by the opportunity to hear firsthand how they tick and what strategies and techniques they use. As someone who is studying communications and has been interested in it my entire life, I find these revelations really enlightening and interesting.
Overall I really liked the class. I found it interesting, challenging and a good learning opportunity. I only wish that I had had more time with my group to prepare our final work and that the assignments had been explained in more depth and detail. Due to the time constraints and the wide berth of the project, I found this aspect to be the most challenging and would have liked to be able to put more time into our campaign.
I also found the rampages website confusing and inconvenient as I would often have to go on digging expeditions to find important information.
