Over the six-week course, I was exposed to many ideas that I had never heard of before. Ideally, I would like to work for a non-profit dealing with women’s reproductive rights in Sub-Saharan Africa, so I felt I could learn a lot from this course and it’s focus on international health. I came into the course hoping to learn more about social media usage in a company setting and was pleasantly surprised to see more of a focus on the non-profit sector. Coming out of the course, I feel that I have learned a lot about social media usage for non-profit organizations and the proper methods for reaching a target audience and encouraging participation from followers.
One of the key lessons I learned in this course would be the importance of interaction between an organization and its followers. Followers respond very strongly to be acknowledged by an organization and continue to like, share and support organizations that take the time to acknowledge and thank followers.
This course also taught me the proper way to reach a target audience through unique campaigns, development of a unique hashtag and cross posting between social media platforms to spread information and strengthen a campaign. Working with Preemptive Love Coalition, I really developed an understanding of creating unique content for an organization’s campaign. Team 12’s multimedia element stimulated a very strong emotional response. I have no doubt that the video along with the campaign proposed to PLC would bring increased followers on all social media platforms and continued support from current followers.
This course taught me a lot about the amount of time allotted for social media usage for non-profit communications departments. Since it is not a priority for a lot of non-profits, it is increasingly difficult to stimulate interest and increase followers with such a small amount of time dedicated to social media interaction. Overall, I leave the course with a stronger understanding of social media techniques, importance of social media usage for organizations and strength of social media campaigns, particularly when executed properly with multimedia, hashtags and cross posting.
