After completing this Global Health and Social Media course, it was definitely a surprise. My expectations were completely different in both a negative and positive aspect.
The learning I gained in this course has been extremely beneficial. My goal is to have a profession in social media management so I found this very valuable. Studying the in’s and out’s of social media for large organizations allowed me to see an in-depth view of just how much work goes into the process. Additionally, watching the Google Hangouts of very established organizations gave us the opportunity to learn best practices and apply those concepts to our proposed campaigns. I believe that building a following for nonprofits is actually more difficult than for profit companies because people have the choice to give versus for profit where they are typically consumers. Building brand loyalty without selling a product or service is quite a challenge. Therefore, if we can walk away successfully knowing how to campaign for a nonprofit then it should be easily applicable to other types of businesses.
The daily and weekly requirements for posting to Instagram and Twitter gave a real life application to the course. It allowed the students to see how much effort it is to post content consistently and more importantly relevant content. Slight mistakes such as forgetting to post or leaving out the hash tag would result in a grade deduction, which could be related to the organization level by decreases in audience engagement. I really got an inside look into how difficult it is to build a following and increase interaction with followers.
The most challenging aspect was the level of collaboration required in order to work under such a short deadline in an online course with an extensive amount of work assigned. It was extremely difficult to schedule times to meet among five other group members when initially our expectation was that the coursework could be accomplished strictly online. Six weeks goes by extremely quick, especially when the first week is introductions, and information is only divulged as the instructor sees fit. It would have been more beneficial to have access to all course requirements and assignment details so that each group could have worked at their own pace. Also, if the course information was easy to find and stored in one location it would be helpful.
Overall, this course has the potential to be extremely valuable and informative. Some honing just needs to be done on the details and organization of the layout.
