I am really glad that I decided to challenge myself with this course. I was already taking 15 credits before this course became available and I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to learn about an aspect of advertising that is so vital in today’s world. The work that we did was really great experience and an awesome portfolio builder. Everything that I learned about the workings of global health centered non-profit organizations is going to benefit me in the long run.
I think that this course did a good job of balancing instruction and construction. We learned so much about social media platforms, when what and where is appropriate to post in order to meet a specific organization’s needs. Along with the instruction that we received the google hangouts were beneficial as well. Getting to hear exactly what an organization does as well as the day to day workings of the media department was extremely interesting and helpful when creating the social media strategy. It was refreshing to hear from the individuals working in the field that many of us hope to enter upon graduation.
The main thing that I found challenging was the amount of assignments. A lecture, 2 google hangouts, tweeting, instagraming, 2 discussions, a reflection, and 2 discussion replies every single week along with the construction of the social media strategy was a bit overwhelming. It was impossible to come back from missed assignments with such little time in the class. I also found the team aspect difficult without meeting in person. All of these things are traits of intensive learning courses and required a quick learning curve that I caught on to. All things considered I really enjoyed the experience, it was challenging, intriguing, and I believe that I learned a great deal of practical information.
