When I originally signed up for this course, I was looking to fill a hole in my curriculum as a Broadcasting student. Due to the amount of technical training we have to have with cameras and editing, there’s not much time to teach essential social media skills in this current day and age. During this course I was able to learn more about how to use certain social media sites like Instagram, but more importantly I learned how to think critically about how social media is used in non-profit work. By analyzing all of these different charities I was able to learn different examples of good social media work and how to translate that into my own branding and branding that I might be called upon to do in the future.
The group project was very interesting to me because I got to work in a team and develop the backbone for a long-standing campaign for a client who really needed help. This was rewarding for two main reasons. The first reason was that I was able to help a great charity who needed a lot of social media direction and assistance. Also, I got to do this work in a team environment that is very close to a real world professional project. My team referred to ourselves as “The Social Media Avengers” in a joking manner because we were all from different disciplines within the Robertson School and were able to combine our different talents to achieve a great project.
What was most challenging for me in this course was working around long hashtags and names in Twitter when crafting posts. I really had to stretch my mind to come up with compelling updates that included all of the necessary tags and mentions. Overall, I think this class really helped add to my knowledge and experience not necessarily as a journalist but as a Mass Communications professional.
