I did not have a Twitter or Instagram profile before this class, so I learned a whole ton not only about how nonprofits use social media but also how I can navigate these sites to best benefit my work in the future. I also have never had the opportunity to work on a video or social media campaign for a nonprofit and was always interested in trying that, so this experience has taught me a lot about what facets of that work I am good/bad at and how to gear my videos and photos to best benefit different clients. I am excited to see other people's campaigns and videos to learn from their experiences and creativity, and hope that others feel the same about Team 12's work.
I had a very hard time working on captions for images and videos before this class, but I now feel that I understand how to maximize narrative and utility in better balance. I feel far more equipped to dissect a campaign by looking at it online and tracking it in various ways, so I am more perception of visual campaigns on social media and their effectiveness as I surf the web.
I think my biggest take-away from this class is learning how to work on a group project where I have no physically met my co-workers. This is increasingly a reality in professional spheres as travel costs and increased internet access drive more and more projects online. Finding a way to use Google Drive, Google Docs, private Facebook groups and e-mail to keep up with everything was a task at first but now I feel I have a much better grasp on my digital workflow.
Working on the presentation video also introduced me to Camtasia, which is a software I'm definitely interested in exploring further. I flexed my skills on a wide variety of Adobe programs to complete the work, and any practice like that is good for my knowledge as well as my portfolio.
