When I first registered for this class I had no idea what it entailed, what to expect or the requirements. I just knew I had to fulfill 3 credit of a MASC elective and this sounded like an interesting course to take since my internship requires me to complete a lot of social media work.
I have learned so much about various non-profit health sectors from viewing and replying to my classmates’ discussion posts as well as through our group projects and readings.Additionally, I have never really kept up with global health issues, or just current events as much as I have until this class. It’s a great feeling being able to keep up and be more involved in what is going on around the world and using social media to do so. With the increase in the use of technology and social media today in the world, this class really pushed me to use my resources to do well; more than just communicate with friends. Subsequently, this taught me about how fundamental using social media plays a part in the success or failure of an organization.
Initially it was challenging for me to compose my tweets and Instagram posts, but as the weeks went along I became really engaged in the tasks. I was able to find articles and topics to discuss. I even began to interact more with my peers as well as the organizations! This really surprised me more than anything. Receiving notifications that organizations wanted to follow me, favorite my tweets, Retweet/repost and even directly reply to me was a great feeling and made me feel a lot more confident in my work for this class. This also exemplified the importance of establishing, building and maintaining a relationship with your audience. Another thing that I found challenging was working in a group for our nonprofit client. Especially with this being an online class, we could never find a mutual time for to all meet, but we got our work done and all put in the effort to produce a good product. Though tedious and demanding at times, I enjoyed everything I have learned in this class and the hands-on experience is something I would never take back because I will definitely be able to apply this knowledge in the future. Not only will I become more aware of health issues around the globe, but also I know how to start my own campaign, propose strategies, build clientele and maintain other professional relationship and of course, use social media to assist me! It was all worth it!
