I felt this class was a big eye opener into understanding non-profit organizations as a whole and the amount of work that is put into helping maintain their charitable reach. Each week learning about success stories and shortcomings from our guest speakers helped me appreciate their efforts and gave me an insight into how I can apply, or not apply those outcomes in my future.
I enjoyed each Google Hangout and benefited from each guest speaker’s in depth point of view of their organization and not shying away from addressing communication difficulties. Speaking out about those problems, and how they came to be, will help me face and handle future projects that might have the same outcomes. I also learned just how difficult it is corresponding with team members solely through online communication and how hard it is to keep it cohesive. I would recommend that everyone that takes this class, or have a project like this in the future, use a separate Facebook group for coming up with ideas and updates, and use a Google Doc only for implementing the draft/final project. I understand now that people will be more comfortable and more responsive using a platform they use everyday, instead of something they would have to take the time to learn. I was appreciative that we had an anonymous survey we could submit for team members that did not pull their weight. I think this helped some students keep their end of the deal and made it clear that our project could not be complete without a group effort.
Along with keeping up with communication with my team members, another hard task was keeping up with our class website and class Facebook group. I constantly felt I was bouncing back and forth between the two and felt I was always missing an important comment or update.
Overall I really like this class and I feel I have a handle on using better social media practices and a little on managing communication for non-profit organizations.
