World Pediatrics Project (WPP) is a non-profit organization that focuses on the providing care to children in Central America and the Caribbean namely Honduras, Dominican Republic, St. Vincent and Guatemala. Their headquarters is located here in Richmond, Virginia and they have another office located out in St. Louis, Missiouri. They were founded in 2001 and have dedicated the last 13 years to providing tertiary diagnostic and surgical care to children in need. Our Group was tasked with creating a social media campaign surrounding WPP that would bring awareness to them while also help bring attention to them locally, in Richmond. They have told us that even though they may be well known in other countries but many people around the world and indeed in Richmond don’t know of their existence or that they operate out of Richmond. Currently, they are most active through Facebook and Twitter. They have had a little activity through Tumblr and Instagram, but not enough for the campaign to thrive off of. Therefore, our group has decided to focus mainly on improving and increasing WPP’s presence and participation on Instagram and to shed more light on their videos and pictures there. Our group has also been working on Twitter, one of their main and most updated social media platforms, and have been expanding their Twitter followers. We have also been working on their Tumblr page and have been increasing their activity on Tumblr on the whole.
Social Media Strategy
Twitter
Considering our objectives from your organization, we placed the most emphasis on Twitter for the World Pediatric Project. We know that you currently have a twitter account but below are some suggestions that will improve your visibility. Twitter will allow people in the Richmond community and around the world to view your posts and interact directly with you.
Twitter posts can consist of original content relevant to your organization, as well as field-related posts. These can be links to blog articles, infographics, pictures, and re-tweets.
Recommendations: pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/2511787341/yqz7djf532owaz6d9epo.jpeg
VISUAL CONSISTENCY
• The profile picture for your Twitter account should always beThe Word Pediatric Project logo. This will ensure that people know they are in the correct place.
GUIDELINES FOR ENGAGING TWEETS
• Post to Twitter at least one to two times a day. You do not want to make too many posts that can make your viewers annoyed. You want your followers to be able to consume the information you are putting out there, but you do not want them to become overwhelmed with information either. A few social media sites are somewhat suitable to have time in between posts, such as a day or two but Twitter is a more fast paced platform that must be continuously updated to insure an engaged and loyal audience. Remember that you want to build a relationship with your followers.
• On Twitter make sure you tweet about what your organization is involved with at the time. What we mean by this is every time something important happens make sure you share it. When you help out a child in need, or if you have an update about a child’s life you helped, this is a good place to put it. Later we will discuss how you can also share stories about children on other social media sites while being more in dept. Since twitter has a 140 character limit make sure you use 120 of it to captivate your followers, that way you leave room for them to retweet or comment on your post if they want.
#HASHTAGS
(Image of example on Twitter)
Use hashtags on every post-- Tweets with hashtags get twice as much engagement as those without. #HealAChild and/or #RVA can be used on every post, but additional hashtags to categorize the subject of the specific tweet would help drive traffic to your page.
The power of the hashtag is very important. Below are a few suggestions of tags that you can use in your post to bring attention to your page. However be mindful on the amount of hashtags you use. You should also make the tags consistent with your cause
Promote the following hashtags for organization-specific posts:
• #WorldPediatricProject
• #Rva
If other people know about these hashtags, they can provide you with free advertising on these social media sites. We have started to promote your organization by using these hashtags on our personal twitter accounts as well. In addition to these tags we used the tag #locallizingtheproject to bring awareness to your organization. Here are a few more suggestions for hashtags that you can use to bring visibility to your posts.
• #RVAkids
• #Smile
• #nonprofit
• #Children
If you notice any local or organization related hashtags on twitter that you believe will bring attention to your page, use it! These are just suggestions of words we notice are used a lot to get attention.
FOLLOWING OTHER ACCOUNTS
As we mentioned before you want to build relationships with people through your social media. As a result we suggest that you follow other organizations that have similarities to your work, or people you have worked with before. This will help stabilize a relationship that you have already built and allow them to see the work that you are doing. They can re-tweet, or reply to your posts. This will help with visibility as well.
Tumblr
Tumblr is a good social media site for non-profits such as yours to share stories of the children that you have helped. He we came up with a suggestion that you can make a weekly post on Sunday and call it #SuccessSunday.
Recommendations:
#SuccessSundays will consists of visual posts of children the World Pediatric Project has helped and where they are now. This will help bring real life scenarios to the organization, and a face behind the work that you do. This idea can also become shortened and used on Instagram as well.
VISUAL CONSISTENCY
• Any pictures in the field will be great
• You can have a before and after picture of the children
• Make sure the picture relates to the story of the day
• Try to have a picture that followers cannot resist to stop and look at
TAGS
Tumblr is also a site that is big on tags. The tags on Tumblr are a great way to bring visibility to your page.
(Image of how to use Tumblr tags)
Tell Video Stories:
(Image of example on Tumblr)
Visuals are key on Tumblr and a short (1minute) video from someone at the World Pediatric Project or someone you have worked with/helped would be great to display here. The videos can get re-blogged to other’s pages and other non-profits as well.
Instagram
Much of our Instagram campaign was reflective of our tumblr campaign.
We used this social media platform to convey multimedia content such as videos and pictures.
Pictures
- Of W.P.P Patients combined with an inspirationsl quote we came up with
- Included a link to W.P.P website on the user’s biography of their Instagram account
Video
- Of members of the group doing short 15 second videos of what W.P.P. stands for using their terminology “Geography should not be a reason why a child lives or dies.”
- Of members coming up with our own slogan and reciting it in the video “ through gun-fire and rain, wherever there is a child in pain, W.P.P is there to give the children a fighting chance”
Fundraising strategy
For fundraising we decided to make our main focuses on Instagram and Tumblr. We chose these two platforms because World Pediatric Project lacks in traffic on these two sites. By drawing attention to this organization through sites that they lack, we will be able to draw from a wider range of people especially those from a younger generation. Although older demographics are more likely and willing to give their donations, our main goal is to gain awareness especially in the Richmond area. By reaching out to younger generations they may not be as willing to give money, but they are very ready to help in ways that they can. Inspiring is the first step and from that the donations will come.
We will be using Twitter for posting inspirational quotes and links to World Pediatric Project’s site, but Tumblr and Instagram will be used more for posting stories and photos. Through using sites that are both based around visuals it is easier to demonstrate the success stories of the project and action they are taking to further their success. Also, instead of out rightly asking for donations we instead are going put the link to their donate page in the bio. As we have learned, people are more likely to donate. When they make the decision on their own to do so instead of being asked.
Tracking, Evaluation, and Measurement
Twitter: WPP is already very active with their Twitter page and therefore rather than taking their Twitter platform in a different direction we simply added on to their presence there. By putting content on twitter, WPP is allowing a large range of people to see their content which includes photos, infographics and re-tweets. Twitter also allows local businesses and other groups who campaign on social media to see their posts which is highly important for their localization project.
Tracking: look out for any mentions and look out for our hashtags, #localizetheproject and #healachild. Try to use these hashtags on every post.
Instagram: Increasing WPP’s presence on Instagram was one of our projects main goals. As far as localizing the project goes, Instagram is a very popular and heavily used app in Richmond, so it is the perfect social media platform for our campaign. Instagram allows individuals and groups, non-profit and other businesses, to see pictures and images presented in a tasteful, artistic and creative way.
Tracking: similarly to Twitter, look for hashtags like #localizetheproject, #RVA and #healachild. We found that more people engaged when we used pictures of children who were saved or helped in developing countries; people like to see that an organization they support is being active and showing the results of the group helps validate their support. We also try to leave links on every other post to the group’s website.
Tumblr: WPP wasn’t having much of an impact through Tumblr so we thought that expanding their attention to Tumblr would be beneficial considering that Richmond city is home to many Tumblr users and Tumblr also just expanded by opening another office here in Richmond. Their company's mobile app developers and community support team are also located in Richmond, so Tumblr is extremely popular here. Tumblr is a blogging platform where people can post and share pictures, stories and ideas.
Tracking: besides the usual hashtags like #localizetheproject #RVA and #healachild, also be on the lookout for #SuccessSunday. Every Sunday, we will share a picture and a story of a child who was saved through WPP’s support and we will tag the post with #SuccessSunday. We believe that social media should only be used to bring awareness to the group that is posting on it and not as a source to beg for donations, and therefore we have posted a link to the group’s website where those who want to donate or find out more about World Pediatric Project’s goals can go.
Social Media Campaign
With our main platforms for our campaign being Tumblr and Instagram we have been focusing our attention on success stories and photos. For starters we have been active on Tumblr by posting stories and working towards gaining more followers. To do so we have been using Twitter to post links to not only World Pediatric Project’s website, but also the link to our Tumblr and Instagram page. By using our own private Twitter page to request followers we are able to grab the attention of our friends and family members that are already interested in our day to day activities. Once we have gained their attention we can ask them to not only follow us but to retweet, reblog, and repost, which will then reach out to other people as well.
Our first post on Tumblr was simply on what our campaign goals are and what we were planning on doing for the World Pediatric Project. After that we have been focusing more on their success stories and events that they are putting on. For example, every Sunday is Success Sunday where we post two stories on who the project has been successful in helping. Each and every day World Pediatric Project is changing the lives of children with the help of their medical volunteers, hospital partners, supply donors, and contributors. By posting these stories about those helping and the children we can gain more attention on the good they doing around the world.
We have kept the same idea for Instagram as well, but on a smaller scale. Tumblr is meant for blogging and posting photos, while Instagram is meant more for short write-ups and impacting photo. This is a more productive approach because people are more interested in seeing success than reading about it. Seeing a helped child smiling in a photo is more impactful than reading about it. The World Pediatric Project also has tons of photos on their website so it makes easy to find material to post on. We also have used Instagram to upload videos that we have personally made. With time being limited in the videos we said inspirational quotes and put links to WPP’s website in the bio as well as our hashtags #localizetheproject and #healachild.
