For this discussion, I chose to focus on United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund also known as UNICEF. UNICEF is a global organization that focuses on the needs of children across the world to eventually help the world become a better place. The main idea of this organization is helping the children because they are our future. It was created in 1946 by the United Nations to help needs of children after war in Europe and China. UNICEF focuses on helping children overcome poverty, violence, disease, and discrimination. The members of this organization nurture children, giving them a chance to build a strong foundation to have a brighter future. They promote equal education for all, anti-discrimination, and health; making sure children receive immunizations and are nourished and protected from disease. In addition, UNICEF helps children in any emergency situations in which a child may be threatened, exploited or in/around violence. UNICEF is a member of the Global Movement for Children and is active in over 190 countries worldwide.
UNICEF has a very well put together website (http://www.unicef.org/). It is very informative, includes photos, and engages users. The information is clear and easy to navigate. In addition to this website UNICEF is very active among many social media platforms. They are found on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Tumblr, Pinterest, Google+, and Instagram. Its Facebook page has 4,409,590 likes and 3.15 million followers on Twitter. I visited each of sites in which they are located on social media. It is hard to direct attention to just one because they are so interlinked with each other. I think this is a good thing. Since they are located on almost every social network, if a viewer may only be active on one site, they still have the opportunity to view this organizations page. It is so easy to access other platforms from one initial platform with just the click of a link. Each of the social media platforms engages users. In my opinion, I believe their photography is one of the key aspects that grasp viewers’ attention. As it was mentioned in the weekly lecture, photographs are processed faster, evoke emotions, and you remember them longer. Each site that UNICEF is located on is full of pictures. These pictures grasp you attention and make you want to read the caption or article that follows it. Another aspect that I believe aids in the success of the organizations presence on social media is its consistency. Most of the articles are the same on each platform, therefore no matter which platform of social media you are using; you still have access to the same information. Also, I checked the dates of the posts. They have all been updated within the last two days. UNICEF is currently running a campaign and relief effort for the children effected by the Ebola virus. Information is being posted almost every day keeping viewers updated and informed about what is going on. UNICEF also uses popular hashtags across its social media sites, not only twitter. This helps because one may not be directly on their site but if they search the hashtag the organization’s posts will appear, also helping them gain more traffic to their site.
Recently UNICEF has been making headlines about its relief and aid that the organizaiton have been providing those affected by the Ebola virus. Many children whose parents have been affected by the virus are left to become orphans. Some children are even being affected and this organization has been raising money to help find homes for the orphaned children and medical help for those that have been affected with the virus. Also, joined by the United Nations World Food Programme, UNICEF has helped over 500,000 people in Southern Sudan. They have provided food, immunizations and vaccinations, and giving out water and hygiene supplies. These two groups have also been aiding in reuniting families.
