For this weeks discussion I decided to write about Livestrong. Last week I wrote about “Breast Caner Awareness.” I decided I should continue to talk about cancer since this is an important topic that has been around for years. According to Kxan Lance Armstrong is still on fire with the media for using performance-enhancing drugs years ago. This is another reason why I wanted to talk about him and his foundation.
Livestrong foundation formally known as the Lance Armstrong foundation is a non-profit organization trying to help people who have been affected by cancer. Lance Armstrong was diagnosis with cancer at a young age of 25 in 1996. Lance has dedicated himself to being the leader and an advocate speaker for cancer survivors. One of the most successful fundraising ideas they had was the Livestrong yellow arm bracelet. They were very popular back in the day. Everyone including me had one. Many companies sold this type of bracelet but the yellow one was the most popular. Survivors, families of survivors, and celebrities such as Betsey Johnson wore the Livestrong bracelets. According to the Huffington post they used to retail for only $1 now they have double the price. You can get them online for $4.99.
One thing I notice is when I first went on their website they have a donate button. I read an article saying that it is a good reminder to tell people about donating. People do not want to go looking on the page on where to donate. I think this is another great strategy. They have two options once you click the donate button. You can click either donate money or “other ways” to donate. The other ways you can help the foundation make money is by workplace giving, corporate partnerships, wedding gifts, vehicle donations etc. I personally would donate money or give my time to helping survivors of cancer. I have cancer survivors in my family and my grandmother died of cancer before I was born so I have a soft spot for caner patients.
In the Google Hangout video this week, one of the things that stood out to me was that people usually follow a “trend.” This means they only donate to organizations that are popular and I agree. I feel like organizations such as Feeding America, Make a Wish, and Charity Water are successful because they are well known, but organizations like Smile Train, and Preemptive Love are not as popular and people do not donate as much money as they would to a while known organization. I feel that everyone should donate to a cause that they feel will benefit someone in need. Just showing support and that you care is a great thing.
