In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, for this discussion I’ve decided to focus on Susan G. Komen. Susan G. Komen is a breast cancer awareness organization. This was the first organization dedicated to breast cancer awareness. Since then there have many organizations that have emerged to help the same cause. Of the many organizations that pertain to this cause, Susan G. Komen is the only organization that approaches many different sectors involving breast cancer; such as community health, research, and global outreach.
The Susan G. Komen has a sector called Passionately Pink where individuals can donate and/or start their own fundraiser, under The Komen organization that supports funding research and outreach for breast cancer. Susan G. Komen organization also has the “Susan G. Komen 3-Day” which is a three day event to raise money for the organization. The event starts on a Friday and continues over the rest of the weekend. Participants walk in total approximately 60 miles this weekend. Participants form teams and raise money together. They are also asked to raise $2,300 per individual. One participant and dual team captain, the winner of the 2014 Seattle walk, Tina McDonough has raised in total over $1.8 million dollars since 2007 with the help of her teams. This September almost 5,000 people participated in the 3 mile walk in Winston-Salem, NC. This walk is known as Race for the Cure, a signature fundraising event hosted by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Organization.
Within our lecture this week many strategies to fundraising via social media were discussed. Some of the same concepts were also discussed during the good plus hangout. Strategies that were discussed during both the google plus hangout and our lecture that apple to the Susan G. Komen organization were donate now, event based donations, and having a walk/run. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Organization incorporates all three of these strategies. There is a donate now button located on the organizations website. The organization's fundraising walks incorporate both event based donations as well as walks/runs/swims etc. I think another important factor that contributes to the success of the company is the reputation it builds with its members. During the lecture building a relationship with your public is very beneficial to a companies success. I think this is true to the Susan G. Komen organization. They have a relationship with their members and this is why so many women repeatedly sign up for annual events.
