Save the Children is an organization created in the 1930s that provides aide, education, emergency response, prevent hunger and much more. Save the Children is successful in fundraising because it gains money in many innovative and engaging ways including color runs, donating weddings (celebrate with a save), celebrity endorsements via indiegogo and even a virtual holiday catalog (Holiday Gifts of Joy) where you can give small business loans ($80), a temporary school ($200) and even a donkey ($100.)
Save the Children’s website has a section of Getting Involved and in there is a link called “Become a Fundraiser.” There it offers fun fundraisers where you can create your own fundraiser, a program called Celebrate with Save (donating with your birthdays or weddings) and Run for Kids in Save The Children’s national annual fun run. This reminds me of FEMA’s Gloria Huang’s unity of effort. Instead of coming together for a wedding and wedding gifts, you can ask people to donate to Save The Children instead as their wedding gift. Unity is also present when Save The Children says that even high school or youth groups can help fund raise and advertise.
Holiday Gifts of Joy is my favorite form of fundraising I have seen throughout this whole course. It is a very creative, fun and personal way to change a child’s life. Seriously, I can’t stop scrolling through and seeing all of the gifts available. It really feels like a Christmas catalog and entices me to donate some chickens or malaria nets. With this form of fundraising you also receive a bonus gift if you had donated a certain amount of money. The bonus gift portion of the Holiday Gifts of Joy related to what Sarah Milston of The Spark Mill said about effective fundraising techniques like this.
Save the Children has also received celebrity endorsements and donations like a YouTube star and the richest man in the world. Internet sensation Pewdiepie asked all of his subscribers, who he personally calls his “Bros”, to donate money to reach the goal of $250,000 in a month long campaign via Indiegogo.
Not only did fans donate because they love the “Pewds” but he enticed people with big perks if they donated a certain amount of money like Skype calls, signed headphones and a livestream serenade. This is a great example of what Sarah Milston talked about: of the importance of a positive reputation and good connection with their audience. Bill Gates, of the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation donated a five-year $50 million grant to the global program Saving Newborn Lives worldwide, according to a press release.
Save the Children is a successful organization for fundraising because it makes donating fun, interesting and personal.
