The Alliance of Hope for Suicide Survivors is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide counseling and support for those who have lost a loved one to suicide. Since 2008 the website has an active forum in which everyday users post stories on how they deal with the grief and despair of losing a loved one to suicide. The forum also includes posts from those saying without the alliance, they don’t know what they would have done.
This is a nonprofit that has a strong fundraising ethic, which shows through their website. Because of this they were named the top local nonprofit of September 2012 by the Huffington Post and also ranked a top nonprofit from 2011-2013. Upon entering their website there is a button to the right that says donate, which leads to numerous options. There are preselected amounts that range from $30 to $1000, as well as an “other” option so people can donate whatever they want. There are options for how frequently someone wants to donate, as well as a place for someone to explain their purpose for donating (in memory, in honor, etc.).
I think the best practices for fundraising would have to be something that Sarah Milston mentioned in her google hangout, which is what helps the Alliance of Hope. She mentions that organizations should have donation buttons on their websites and give different options that donators can select from. This is something that has definitely helped the alliance remain successful, and why they have been ranked a top nonprofit consistently for a few years in a row. It seemed like a few nonprofits I looked at for this assignment, even the alliance of hope, didn’t do well on sites such as crowdrise.com which might be attributed to the fact that there aren’t many options to choose from.
Another practice that was mentioned by Gloria Huang in her google hangout is that there needs to be a successful way for getting information out on social media. The alliance of hope has social media accounts, but they also have an incredibly active forum that thousands of users engage on every day. Inspirational and sometimes emotional posts are shared from the forum to their Facebook page daily which gives others insight into what community members are thinking. She also talked a lot about sparking conversations and getting people to talk, which is definitely something that happens on the alliance’s social media pages.
