The Hospital Hospitality House here in Richmond caters to patients and families in medical situations that may require long-term care. The Hospitality House is a great nonprofit organization that provides all the amenities of home in a setting that also offers the medical care they may need. The HHH was founded by the MCV Hospital Auxiliary in 1984, and was originally located in the Zeigler House, just two blocks away from the MCV campus. Since then, the HHH has moved to a 121 room renovated hotel just down the street from VCU, between 7th and Marshall St. One of the most important attributes about the Hospital Hospitality House is that, although the building operates seven days a week, 365 days a year, patients and families stay on a suggested donation basis, however, no guest is ever turned away due to inability to contribute. Another important aspect of the organization is that it operates solely on donations.
Not only does the organization provide private rooms for patients and guests, the building is equipped with a fully stocked kitchen, an exercise room, a television room, a laundry room, library, parlor, and chapel. How a donation based organization can afford to run on all this, one may ask. Due to their excellent fundraising campaigns, the Hospital Hospitality House has been able to provide a home away from home to patients and families, and only been able to improve upon their mission since. In order to provide funding for the operation, the HHH hosts a number of special fundraising events throughout the community each year. For example, they host a Restaurant Walk which features a sampling of food from various Shockoe Bottom restaurants with the purchase of each ticket. Another annual event they host each year is a champagne luncheon with a guest speaker that may be anyone from a comedian to a professional athlete. Finally, they have a cocktail party each year at the Science Museum of Virginia, which the public can purchase tickets for and spend the evening enjoying hors d’oeurves, cocktails, and live music. In order to advertise the availability of these great fundraising events, the HHH relies heavily on their Facebook and Twitter pages to extend the invite to the community. About a month ago, they even collaborated with the World Pediatric Project! Overall, with the help of social media, the HHH has had great successes with their fundraising in order to expand their building and operations, as well as help members of the community for three decades.
