The American Heart Association has an interesting program going on where they educate people on the importance of learning hands only cpr for people who may be suffering from cardiac arrest. In the article that I read they talk about how the most common cause for adults randomly collapsing is a result of cardiac arrest. The chance of somebody dying from this can be severely reduced by more than half however if bystanders react quickly enough. The article stresses the importance of calling 911 in addition to doing hands only cpr (meaning no breaths are used). There are “teams” that people can join and create a page with which is easily shared through social media and has proven to be incredibly effective.
In addition the American Heart Association is known for their fundraising tactics. One example of this is the Kansas City branch that was able to not only surpass their fundraising goals but make an event that they were hosting trend across social media. For the Kansas City Heart Walk, they had a social media hub created which allowed for people to see their posts pop up on the screen when using the #KCHeartWalk tag. This social media phenomenon got the event to trend in the area for 9 hours and was the number one most talked about event for a period of time during the walk. Also, they estimate that 400,000 people were reached and they gained 70 twitter followers and 40 facebook likes.
In the google hangout with Sarah Milston, I was immediately able to connect with her message about building a relationship and strong social media presence before seeking out donations. I think that this something that the American Heart Association does very well because they are consistently posting and holding events which don’t directly ask people for donations but do make people aware of what the organization represents and what sort of difference they make in the community which kind of gives people an incentive to donate without having to be asked. I also think that. Another reason why it is so important to build strong relationships is because when you are able to get multiple people to be engaged then they start sharing your links and posts which gives them potential to reach massive amounts of others who maybe haven’t heard of the organization or if they have don’t follow it on social media.
