We all remember the craze of those yellow Livestrong bracelets that became sold out everywhere and quickly became a fashion statement as well as a great tool for fundraising for The Livestrong Foundation. Livestrong, formally known as the Lance Armstrong Association, is a widely popular non-profit organization that provides support for people with cancer.
The little yellow wristband soon became their trademark and way to raise awareness about cancer. In May 2004, when the wristband idea was first proposed it was never supposed to be as popular as it was, but quickly after being developed it was hard to walk around and not see at least one person wearing one. The crazy thing was that the bracelets were only $1 each but raised over an estimated $70 million for the charity, and caused lots of people to become more aware about cancer in general.
Not only did this trend and awareness for a cuase become popular through schools and seeing our peers wearing them which made everyone have to get one, it was made popular when the Tour de France took place in 2004, most of the bikers were wearing this which made a lot more people and major famous athletes start wearing them and as we know when a celebrity wears something, it immediate takes off, this was huge for Livestrong. Their "lifestyle" brands and merchandise soon became such a popular and easy way for people to have some cool threads, this technique alone raised over 600 million dollars in donations thus far, helping people cope with cancer everyday and of course staying on top of their social media giving people live updates about whats new and what cool new product is coming out next!
The technique that Livestrong used with the yellow bracelets is a live example of what was talked about in the Google hangout, saying that when you can see people really using a cool way to donate, other people want to donate too. So with the bracelets as you donate, you are getting this cool bracelet in return and then you see other people wearing it and it just spreads creating a hot commodity, fashion statement and great charity for the organization. It's also great to note that buying the merchandise and finding whats new, and donating all together is made easy through the Livestrong Online Store. Now you can even get the classic yellow bracelet with little meanings on them, so you see they changed them a little bit but with the same cause in mind.
Some of the articles I read have been putting the bracelets into a search of weather or not to wear them after the Lance Armstrong incident. People still continute to wear them regaurdless just because of the fact that it is helping people become more aware and help the cause to cancer patients and the loved ones who have to loose someone year after year.
