The non-profit I will be taking a closer look at is The Arthritis Foundation. This non-profit organization focuses on the prevention and eventual cure of arthritis in the United States. There are 3 types of arthritis that patients suffer from, Rheumatoid, Osteoarthritis, and Juvenile Arthritis. Often times arthritis is over looked and assumed to be a result of ageing, but many people are surprised to find out just how many children are affected by the disease. The most success that the organization has had in raising money seems to come from fundraisers and private donations. This non-profit is also the national philanthropy of Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity, a women’s fraternity that was established in 1897. The ladies of AOII hold philanthropy events year around and all of the money goes directly to The Arthritis Foundation. This non-profit was chosen because 1 in 4 women will be diagnosed with some form of arthritis in their lifetime. Being that there are over 100 chapters in the US and Canada this is one of the largest ways that the organization is funded. The foundation also sponsors their own events that AOII and the community participate in such as the Jingle Bell Run, held annually in December. The Arthritis Foundation will sponsor events, because nearly everyone either has a family member or knows someone afflicted by arthritis the community is extremely supportive of events.
Of the many recommended practices for social media fundraising I would have to say that the arthritis foundation excels best with attaching itself with accredited research facilities that in turn add legitimacy to the organizations cause. On The Arthritis Foundation website an abundance of information about ongoing research, recent findings, and tips for living a life with arthritis can be found. The fact that this information is so readily accessible, and that they engage so much with their audience they are viewed as a more legitimate cause to donate money to. The organization posts helpful information as well as new findings to keep viewers as best informed as possible. The main goals of the organization is to raise awareness/ hopefully prevent the onset of the disease as well as support those working towards a cure in the future. As of now there is no cure for arthritis what so ever. It is the hope of The Arthritis Foundation that with the support of the community they will be able to raise money to fund research that will eventually lead to a cure for all types of arthritis.
