Planned Parenthood is a reproductive health nonprofit that provides contraception, pap smears, well women check ups, morning after pills, and abortions to women for free all across the country. According to an article in the New Yorker, the organization was started in the 1920s by Margaret Sanger in New York City in order to help protect women’s reproductive rights as well as serves the poor. According to an article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, earlier this month Planned Parenthood came out in opposition to Wisconsin Governor’s campaign ad against abortion. Most of Planned Parenthood’s funding comes from federal grants established in the 1970s, and the rest come from private donations both large and small donors. Originally passed in the 1970s by the Nixon administration, Title X is a federal law, which mandates funds for the non-profit. Both Democrats and Republicans supported the measure, although for different reasons. The Democratic party had a strong plank in their platform protecting women’s rights to choose, while the Republicans viewed this as a means of keeping people out of the welfare system.
The other parts of funding come from donations. The organization has a very high profile and wide range of services provided, so they are able to use this to gather support from large donors like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In addition to multimillion-dollar support from single people or donations, they also have developed really good rapport with small time donors on social media. By adopting a system very similar to the American Diabetes Association, they are able to engage with their readers by sharing health information as well as asking for input.
By communicating effectively with people across multiple platforms, Planned Parenthood achieves several goals. The first goal is to raise awareness of their organization as a whole and to provide useful information for people interested in women’s health issues. By discussing STI myths, contraception information, and other tips relating to women’s health it helps build the foundation for their mission of wide spread and women focused reproductive health. In addition to this, it helps combat negative information that comes from right wing groups. Instead of stooping down the level of anti abortion scare groups, instead they courteously defend their mission with information and speaking out when they feel it is necessary. Finally, this strategy of building community brings in donations.
