For this week’s discussion on a non-profit and its fundraising techniques I will focus on the Susan G Komen organization. On the Susan G Komen website they explicitly say “Susan G. Komen is the ONLY organization that addresses breast cancer on multiple fronts such as research, community health, global outreach and public policy initiatives in order to make the biggest impact against this disease.” Having said this Susan G Komen works on all fronts to make a difference, which encourages people to become more involved with the fundraisers they hold.
Susan G Komen works very hard to fundraise for themselves and those fighting breast cancer; in my opinion their most influential fundraiser is the “race for the Cure”. According to an article from Houston News Susan G Komen held their 24th annual “Race for the Cure” event to fundraise for the Houston area and its surrounding sister cities. This is an excellent example of how the organization uses fundraising because it was the 24th year this race had occurred in Houston proving that have a lasting effect on the public. The race is their biggest fundraiser with nearly 1.6 million people participating all over four different continents.
Another impressive fundraising event that Susan G Komen holds is the “3-Day” event. This event is 3 days of women walking 60 miles total together while dancing, singing, and having a blast. According to “kirotv.com” that discusses a recent “3-day” event, each person who was apart of the walk raised at least $2,300 for the cause. This is an amazing way of fundraising and is an incredible feat for an organization. Those that are involved in this walk are extremely committed to the Susan G Komen organization and have been in touch with them for a long amount of time.
Susan G Komen is phenomenal at fundraising and has been around for so long that generations have been passed down through the years getting women of all ages involved. I am beyond impressed with the ways in which the Susan G Komen organization has used their history and place among so many women to fundraise over four continents since 1980. I believe that many other organizations should take note of the ways in which Susan G Komen uses fundraising and improve themselves.
