The Wounded Warrior Project is a nonprofit that aims to raise the awareness of the public of the needs of injured service members. The nonprofit’s vision is to “foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation’s history.” The Wounded Warrior Project has a strong presence on social media and like most nonprofit’s, they use social media to connect with the public in order to spread awareness and raise money to support their cause. My first article discusses The Combined Federal Campaign #11425, hosted by the Wounded Warrior Project and has been named the world’s largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign. Last year over $5 million was raised in support of the Wounded Warriors Project. Much of the reason this campaign was so successful is attributed to the strong social media presence this nonprofit has generated. I found a great article online titled, Social Media Bridging Gap Between Troubled Vets and Treatment. This article discusses the power of social media related to raising awareness and funds for this cause. The Wounded Warrior Project has also created a safe haven for wounded warriors online that can only be accessed by confirmed veterans. Social media has allowed veterans all over the nation to connect with each other and share their stories with one another in order to start the recovery process. The Wounded Warrior Project does several fundraising events throughout the year; the most well known being their charity runs/walks. I feel that this type of fundraiser is very beneficial to this group because the military is extremely physical and military veterans are oftentimes very passionate about fitness. They also offer perks to those who participate in these events. Oftentimes for the cost of registration you get a t-shirt to wear during the run. The Wounded Warrior Project shows their thanks for the smallest of donations, which is really important.
As we learned in the Google+ hangout with Sarah Milston, there are several strategies that nonprofits can use to be successful with online fundraising. Sarah mentioned the importance of sometimes pairing with a for profit when fundraising. The Wounded Warrior Project does this several times a year and especially for The Combined Federal Campaign #11425 mentioned above. The Wounded Warrior Project makes it very easy to find their “donate” button on all of their social media platforms, which is very important! This nonprofit is also very interactive with their donors year round, not just when they want donations. The Wounded Warrior Project has a link on their webpage labeled “fundraising tips”. Here, independent people/groups can learn how to run successful fundraisers on their own to benefit the organization. This page shows several ways to use online social media resources effectively with a step-by-step guide stating various ways to begin/run a fundraising campaign. This nonprofit does a great job at informing people of how they can help. I believe that is an important component to their success because as we have learned, most nonprofits are stretched very thin in the social media department and when people begin their own campaigns with instruction from the nonprofit, not only are they raising money, but awareness as well.
