Doctors without Borders is a non-profit organizations that focuses on humanitarian aid. It goes to many countries around the world that are third world, war-torn, and ravaged by natural disasters. Their goal is to provide relief to people who are in desperate need of assistance. The google hangout earlier this week helped me see what the organization does to help others. This organization uses many pictures to display what conflicts are going on around the world. They are very active on Youtube. They have their own video network that users can subscribe to. Their Youtube page focuses mostly on regions and residents that have been forced to flee due to natural disasters and religious persecution. Some of the recent videos include residents fleeing the Central African Republic, and also residents dealing with all the civil unrest near the Gaza Strip.
One social and visual media strategy that really stood out to me was a recent post on instagram. The disease Ebola is affecting many residents in Africa. In most cases it is incurable. Doctors Without Borders recently featured a little boy named Mamadee. He is 11 years old and was recently diagnosed with Ebola. He was from Liberia, he was tested multiple times for Ebola. According Doctors Without Borders, Mamadee always had a smile on his face. He would entertain other patients, nurses and doctors with his dancing and lightheartedness. He stayed positive, while many others around him were dying and facing death. He ended up beat Ebola. Sadly, his sister did not. She died in a tent next to him. Mamadee was then discharged, he had to be strong for his mother. He told her not to cry and that they would get through this.
I really enjoy reading stories like this. I think, we as Americans love underdog stories. Mamadee beat this horrible disease, he also defied many odds that were stacked against him. This by far was my favorite campaign from Doctors Without Borders. I think it really showed how much of a difference that they are making. They even have an article about him underneath the instagram post. Mamadee is just one of many stories that Doctors Without Borders has on their instagram page. They have many other survivors and their stories. They have about 42,000 followers on Instagram. I hope that they get more followers in the coming days from members of our class. I really enjoyed researching about such a great organization that is saving many lives around the world.
