DoSomething.org is one of the largest organizations that call to action the youth of America to take initiative in making the world around them a better place. This organization has been around since 1993 and is one of the more unique non-profit organizations in that it specializes on mobilizing teens to volunteer and participate in social responsibility to the world. Although DoSomething.org is not a sole health organization, their amazing contributions to the work they have done within global health are something to note. DoSomething.org is also unique because unlike some other non-profits, their productivity is focused more on engaging volunteers verses creating fundraisers and social media donations.
This non-profit organization has always been aimed at empowering youth to take action for causes they are passionate about. Whereas, before the rise of social media teens (and adults) were more reliant on word of mouth to spread a message, the development of social media has given this organization a more productive way to reach out. Aria Finger, the COO of DoSomething.org says “The exciting part is that now, we have an entirely new toolkit at our fingertips – mobile, social, the web, etc – to reach millions of young people who want to make a difference”. This new toolkit has taken the organization to way further levels that it would have been without it.
Visual engagement is a great part of DoSomething.org’s social media strategy. One of the reasons that this organization is so successful at social media is because their targeted demographic had already been in place for years. All the organization had to do was evolve with the times, create the youth as their focus group, and not resist the obvious ways to engage them. In a presentation at the Social Media Strategies Summit in 2014, Aria Finger discusses what makes their visual social media pop. They ask themselves “What does our user want to see?” verses focusing on going viral and what will drive their sales up. Another amazing aspect to DoSomething.org is their early adoption of experimenting quickly to see which platforms best serve their needs. Realizing that visuals are an increasing part of social media strategy, DoSomething has created a snapchat account. Snapchat is an app that allows users to see “stories” or single pictures (snaps” for a certain amount of seconds and refreshes at the end of each day. Essentially when you press the snap story, you will see 5-10 second clips of a person’s day unfolding. Snapchat is the latest buzz-creating image app today. DoSomething has approximately 5,000 snapchat followers globally and host campaigns such as “choose your own adventure”, where the organization sends a massive snap of a daily challenge and the snap followers must “snap” and document themselves doing the challenge.
Although SnapChat was not listed as one of the top visual social media platforms, I believe DoSomething has found a creative way to engage the youth in a visual way which makes the task fun and exciting for the youth.
