After watching the Google Hangout and conducting my own individual research, I found the Doctors Without Borders social media strategy on Pinterest to be quite interesting. They have 713 followers and 900 pins. However, it doesn’t seem to be updated all that frequently. I saw they had a board on Ebola, but it has not been updated since about ten weeks ago.
It ties in to their goal with social media in general, which is to inform and educate people. I believe this approach should be taken by more non-profits. Not only does it benefit society as a whole, but it makes the non-profit more genuine. The Doctors Without Borders Pinterest account contains infographics, world news, great reads, and more. Their belief that communication and information plays a major role in helping and initiating action is something I respect. Not only their Pinterest, but all their social media accounts seem to be more of a news source than a tool to promote the brand.
This social media strategy is drastically different than what we’ve seen with the other non-profits we have discussed so far this semester. They have a priority of brand awareness or fundraising, while the main goal of Doctors Without Borders seems to be social justice and informing the public. I feel like this strategy pays off for them because people who are truly passionate about the causes will get involved when they see how involved the organization truly is. Additionally, their authenticity and priority to educate will gain people’s respect and encourage them to learn more.
Overall, I think Doctors without Borders could be more frequent and consistent on their Pinterest account because they are off to a strong start. They have the magic combination of relevant and interesting content with a strong following. Also, with such a focus on Ebola nowadays I would think they would try to inform on all platforms possible. Collectively, they have an extremely strong social media presence and strategy.
