This week, our social media campaigns and work focuses on visual perception on the web. Visuals have the power to speak as much if not more than words, so it is not surprise that many social media companies have taken to the use of visuals. Both of our google hangouts have great imagery on their websites and social media. The visuals they have stand alone and speak about real situations of the less fortunate.
Many people do not realize how fortunate of they are when compared to others. When you take a look at images from Charity: Water, you see people so excited for water. Many people do not realize to significance of water to our daily lives. With a body that is composed mostly of water, we need water to survive. Most people have not seen the lengths people go to obtain good, clean water. In many countries, as shown by various images throughout the Charity: Water website, water is dirty. Water that is not clean can be a real problem for everyone, especially children with new immune systems. The poor water that these children are drinking contain various bacteria and can be very harmful, but that is the only water available to them. So, the visuals Charity: Water has up on their site dictates this very message. The images are shown displaying people happy to see clean water, happy to finally be able to drink something that won’t harm them or their children, happy to have clean water that some people never consider to be a big deal. Just seeing the difference between the dirty water and clean water is enough to communicate with their viewer, and the pictures of people so happy to see clean water tips the scale even more. When the Charity:Water design team puts words with these pictures, it can speak even more.
Doctors without boarders also does a great job using visuals in their social media. Most of their Facebook posts have photos that tag along with them. Usually they explain or spread a certain message. Lately, they have been using pictures to capture the doctors fighting the Ebola out break and having other images that tell the story of what is going on in different situations. This is another charity where many people forget to think that some people are less fortunate until they see stuff relating to a charity like this. There are nations out there in this world that have terrible health care, and Doctors Without Borders does a great job fighting against that. The visuals they capture depicting what the doctors do, how they are spreading a healthier living, and saving lives with medicine we take for granted, really speak as a whole.
The ways these two charities capture images of the less fortunate opens the eyes to millions of people who have never thought about how fortunate they really are. These charities allow you to see the truth about the world, no matter how cold it may be, and offer you a chance to make a difference in some these people lives. The visuals they employ are very good and can send a stand alone message, it is when ads or messages that can be sent without using words that they can move beyond just words and tell a story.
