The Susan G. Komen foundation is a prime example of a non-profit organization that is really in touch with its audience. They are not only popular, but effective in spreading their message and pursuing a cure for breast cancer. Not only that, but most people know someone who has been affected by breast cancer or any other type of cancer. I know that I had heard of the foundation years ago before even taking this class and have been a part of the famous breast cancer walk.
One aspect of the organization that stands out to me is their partnership with the WWE – a wresting association. The message in their partnership is pretty clear: wrestlers are tough, but women fighting cancer are just as tough if not tougher. This partnership is also affective because it targets both men and women. Breast cancer affects women, but the wrestling aspect appeals to men. The collaboration between these two groups is not just on their website. It has a presence on social media as well, especially Pinterest and Twitter.
October is the awareness month for a lot of different diseases, but the most popular is breast cancer. The Twitter page for the Susan G. Komen organization has been really active, especially in this month. Other organizations and companies have partnered up with the SGK and are showing their support via Twitter. These groups include but are not limited to, Walgreens, Zumba, and American Airlines.
The campaign that stands out to me the most is the #whatgivesmestrength campaign and accompanying hashtag. I actually really love this! Users are invited to share via social media what keeps them strong in the face of a disease that weakens your body over time. It’s powerful, it’s far reaching, and it has a personal aspect that allows you to connect with the user that posted it.
Susan G. Komen foundation is active on Facebook as well. Like other non-profit organizations, they use Facebook to share personal stories as well as spread information about breast cancer in general. I like this about the Facebook page. Susan G Komen foundation is not using the site to focus on the organization, but on the people affected by breast cancers and the people who are still racing towards the cure. The Facebook page has a healthy mix of cancer facts, information, testimonials, and avenues to reach out to volunteer and donate.
The Susan G Komen social media accounts are all unified in their information and what they are displaying without being repetitive, which is important. In my opinion, they make a really good use of each platform.
