The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s has the goal of “caring for the nation…one person at a time.” The organization was founded to provide care and excellence in service to individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related illnesses, and to their caregivers and families. The AFA believes that through raising awareness of the disease along with educating healthcare professionals and the public, they will be able to do things such as lead to early detection of the Alzheimer’s disease and proper treatment as well as improving the quality of life for those struggling with the disease. The organization also strives to urge better community resources for those struggling with the disease. AFA’s top concern is helping to remove fear and denial that surrounds the disease and related illnesses such as dementia. Donations given to the AFA help with counseling social workers and other resources such as National Memory Screening Day as well as providing professional education for those with the disease and their caregivers. After visiting the organization’s twitter I see that they do an excellent job of utilizing the social media website with different links and pictures related to the disease. They also tweet about other things occurring in the health care world which is another plus. The cover photo is touching and I also think that the consistent tweeting is what draws in people to make donations. Links to donate are also posted frequently but not too much on their twitter which would encourage visitors of the twitter to click to make donations. I believe that the dollar bracelets are a nice touch to get people to donate as well because anything counts. The AFA’s use of Instagram is also a great use of social media. Their Instagram is filled with wonderful, eye-catching maps and quotes and other facts about the illness. The pictures of people who are currently participating in walks for the disease all over the nation makes the Instagram engaging to those who donate to the organization. This engagement is what makes social media work for non-profit organizations such as the AFA. They need this engagement to spread awareness or for the this organization their twitter and Instagram do a great job of reeling people in by not only posting different things about making donations, but also by informing the public about statistics, facts, and awareness of the disease. This use of these two social media platforms that are growing in the way they reach the masses is a wonderful technique for the AFA. www.alzfdn.org/AboutUs/network.htmlinstagram.com/alznyctwitter.com/alzfdn

I think the way that the way that The Alzheimer’s Association of America’s New York City chapter runs their insagram is great. They really take every advantage the highly visual platform provides them with. They continuously post images that incorporate the color purple. Just from their instagram I can tell that purple is the color to represent Alzheimer’s awareness just as pink is for breast cancer awareness or red is for AID’s awareness. Almost every post has the color purple in it somehow from a t-shirt to a purple info-graphic and this shows great brand continuality. They also use this platform to not only promote their walks but shows the level of participation they are already getting, which helps get more donation and participants. I feel like people are more likely to participate in a popular awareness walk than one that is not so popular.

I like that you brought up the fact that the Alzheimer's Foundation of America uses pictures as a way to gain supporters. I believe that this is necessary for any non profit organization because people want to be able to see how they are helping people. The pictures could also be a deciding factor for someone to decide that they do actually want to donate to this organization. You discussed that this organization uses many facets of social media. Is this organization very active in interacting with their followers? I also believe that this is very important because if people feel as though you are not willing to be responsive to them on social media, then they may not support your cause.

I think that these charities are all focused on topics that can be very disheartening but it’s important to focus on the positives. The fact that the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America does this is good to hear. Showcasing the people who are helping to fight Alzheimer’s rather than focusing on the negative effects of the disease too much is a good way to keep people upbeat and positive. I agree with you and think that having other, smaller, forms of donation like the dollar bracelets is a good idea. These small things add up and people are more likely, in my opinion, to buy a dollar bracelet or two over donating money.

I stopped at your post because my grandfather actually had Alzheimer’s and at the time I did not know what it was. I believe that the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America is doing a great job of making people aware. A lot of people are unaware of the statistics, until like me, someone who is close to them is affected by it. The use of pictures on their Instagram is another great tool as well. I believe that visuals make a big difference in getting people involved and getting your point across. The use of images can highlight the amount of work, an influence that an organization such as this one has on the community. This was a great post and I gained valuable insight. Thank you for sharing!

I chose this organization because my great-grandmother had Alzheimer's before she passed away and once she passed I began to look more into the disease and that is when I first stumbled upon the AFA michelleg. They are really great with interacting with their followers which is why it is such a successful organization. They make posts on Instagram asking users for photos of them in various walks for the cause and then they post plenty of them for the rest of the world to see. I totally love that you all agree to the dollar donations for bracelets, I mean what girl doesn't love arm candy? This concept is a great idea, but I would also like for them to come up with an item up for purchase that would appeal to men as well.
