I was very excited to hear from Paull Young about Charity: Water. It has to be the most interesting nonprofit I have every heard of. Their idea of people starting their own campaign is brilliant. This nonprofit is more about empowering people to make change happen. It is also amazing that they do not spend any money on marketing or advertising. Everything people know about Charity: Water is because of their own research or word of mouth.
When I got on to Smile Train’s website, for a week I was bombarded with advertising on every website I went to. It was like I was their target, which made me feel very uncomfortable. I like that Charity: Water’s motto is to make people feel less guilty and more inspired.
Inspiration is a key word that not only runs Charity: Water, but Pintrest as well. When I got on to their Pintrest page, I was amazed that they had over seven thousand followers, but their boards could have been just a tad bit more inspirational. They don’t have a quote board. Now, this is practically committing Pintrest sin. Quotes get re-pined so much, and so I was a little disappointed that they don’t have a quote board. I also think that Pintrest is notorious for infographs, and I am sure there are some infographs about water out there. When I heard Paull talk about “Birthdays for Clean Water”, I thought about how they could use this as inspiration on Pintrest. They only have about 10 pins about people donating money on their birthdays. From what Paull said, it seems like a lot of people participate in “Birthdays for Clean Water”. I am surprised that there aren’t more then 10 stories. Same with their creative fundraising board, they are not posting enough stories. Paull said that people inspire him with their creative campaigns, so I think they need to spend more time pinning these stories.
I think that one key Pintrest board that they are missing is to remind people that water is necessity that a lot of people aren’t getting, so I would love to see a board about how people could save more water. Basically pinning ideas on how to save water. Their yellow water can is iconic and it would also make an epic Pintrest board. It would pictures of that yellow water can, and they have tons of pictures with them. This would go right along with Paull said about how Charity: Water is about branding.
Overall, I think they have untapped potential in their Pintrest page. They could do so much if they just had the resources to do so, but hey, that’s what interns are for.
