Though the world has grown since the times of segregation due to the color of one's skin, discrimination is still evident in our world today in a very big way. Discrimination is considered the unjust treatment of those that belong to a different category of people or things such as race, age, or sex. One of the most combative discrimination is against sexual orientation and gender identity.
Virginia is lagging behind many other states when it comes to protecting the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transvestites and protecting them from discrimination. Founded in 1989 Equality Virginia is a statewide, non-partisan education, outreach, and advocacy organization seeking equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Virginians (LGBT). Within this group they also strive to protect families, end discrimination, and build safe communities for those exposed to injustice due to other sexual orientation. Some of their success stories include defeating legislation to ban gay adoption, helped pass anti-bullying legislation within public schools, and supporting a lawsuit that overturned a law threatening to take away liquor licenses for establishments employing or catering to homosexuals.
Equality Virginia can be found on Facebook with more than 7,000 likes as well as a Pinterest and Twitter page. Though 7,000 likes may not seem like a lot, they make daily post on activities not only in Richmond but across the country. From links on Supreme Court cases, pictures of events they have attended, and videos, Equality Virginia is doing all they can to stay involved with those in the RVA community. And with it being LGBT History Month you can find out about the early days of our country and how LGBT played their role in our history.
You can also find links to their blogs and where they have shown up in the news on their website www.equalityvirginia.org. On their blog you can read more about issues facing those in the LGBT community with personal stories from those directly involved as well as stories on legal cases and events. On the link called New Archive you can read stories on where Equality Virginia has been making waves in our community.
With a simple click of their donate now button you will be directed to a page asking for your information and how much you would like to donate. What's unique about how they ask for donations is beside each amount of money you give it will tell you where your money will be directly sent to.
