For Discussion 5 I decided to research more into Charity: Water. Charity water is a non-profit organization that is trying to provide clean water to those in countries that don’t have an easily available source of clean water. Their goal is to create simple solutions to provide those in need of clean water, and to bring more awareness of the individuals who are need of this.
I decided to research Charity: Water’s Instagram account. I come from a photographic background with an Associate’s in Photography, so I love researching anything to do with photography. As soon as I opened up their Instagram account, the first thing I noticed was the substantial amount of one-person portraits that popped up. A majority of their photos are just portraits of a single person either posing or it just being a candid shot. When I started to browse more closely through the photos I definitely noticed the sheer quality of these pictures, these were not amateur photos, they were photos taken by professionals with a professional set up. The lighting and composition of these photos are not taken coincidentally, these are amazing photos done by amazing photographers. The lighting on the photos is what really took me, something about the way these subjects are lighted; it adds something so much more to the photo. For me, it’s taking something that people would not ordinarily see in such a glamorous way, and transforming the image into something more.
A lot of other organizations do take high quality photos just like Charity: Water, but to me they are just trying to get something out of the images, to try and get a pull on your heart strings to make you react emotionally (in a sad way) to the pictures. In looking at Charity: Water’s website, one line really stuck out to me: “we'd like to introduce you to a few of those 800 million. They are very real, and they need our help.” They’re not only showing you the bad sides of the fact that these people don’t have water, they’re showing you real people, people who are living their everyday lives and doing what they need to do to get clean water for themselves and their family. Water is also included into every image on Instagram, whether as a forefront or a background item.
Their unique approach to how they represent their photos is to me, a way that makes them different from other organizations. They make their photos very personal to everyone, and shows their subject in such a flattering light, it makes you want to look at more.
