Doctors Without borders is a unique organization that it spends its time to not only assisting individuals in the areas during crisis but also recording their experiences. Its mission is to provide medical aid where ever it is needed, and speaking out about what they see. Whether is civil conflicts and unrest, natural disasters, or Epademics such as Ebola, the organization is there.
As the brainchild of both doctors and journalists, it makes sense that they greatly benefit from the use of Tumblr.
Tumblr is a very unique platform within itself, the platform allows for continuous content to be customized to liking of the individuals or organizations. With their account, Doctors without borders has maximized on the option to combine artistic graphics of the environments in which they work. Unlike other platforms, you have some flexibility as blogging platform. Visual aspect of the platform tells the story of their work and all they do. As we have seen recently almost all organization have an active Instagram account, but a Tumblr account is rare. Especially for a nonprofit.
The fact that Doctors Without Borders has an active and engaging Tumblr with a following, and average notes over 100 it’s definitely something that stands out to me. They also attributed the individual that took the photo, which is something that lacks many times on platforms such as instagram.
They’ve taken advantage that the account allows for supports to view different archives based upon areas of interest or support. Along the sides they have different tabs for: hiv/adis, malnutrition, neglected diseases, Africa, Middle East, and Haiti. With over 195 million blogs from people all around the world, that gives them a opportunity to reach supporters no matter where they are. The account also allows for them to link the streaming tweets from their account so visitors don’t miss anything from them.
The organization gives its volunteers the opportunity to capture shots of what they do in the field to be documented and used a way to promote the awareness of what they are doing and the unfortunate environments that these people have to live in on a daily basis. In many case users of Tumblr are more empathetic with many viral campaigns gaining enormous support from many users of the site such as Kony 2012.
