I decided to pick the Alzheimer’s Association because it hits close to home. My grandma has had Alzheimer’s for quite a few years now and it is only getting worse. She no longer remembers me or any of my other family members. This is a tragic disease that hurts so many families and needs awareness. I researched how they use the social media platform Twitter to raise awareness and get people involved.
Overall, the Alzheimer’s Association has 42.6K followers on Twitter. This is a pretty good following and is crucial for nonprofits like this. They are very active on Twitter and have plenty photos of what they do and stand for. Many of their photos show their promotions. They show professional baseball teams who wear purple during games to raise awareness. They also feature news reporters like Al Rocker and Wolf Blitzer and thank them for wearing purple to raise awareness. Photos also show walks and regular people wearing their purple to the walks also thanking them for walking, which is very personable. I also looked at the tweets they favorite and they favorite tweets mostly supporting the organization and all it does for the disease.
Unlike many nonprofit organizations, the Alzheimer’s Association does not stress people to donate and that is not all of what their tweets consist of. They seem to want to raise awareness more than anything else. Walks, wearing purple, news time, etc. are all ways they seem to do this. This does set the foundation for people to want to get involved and donate. It is a much more subtle approach to get people to donate. People with families are obvious contributors to this cause but is important to get people who are not directly involved with the disease to be inspired.
In their biography, they have the link to their website, alz.org, which has information about what Alzheimer’s is, symptoms and stages, treatment and research, how to get involved, etc. You can also find walks that are happening near you and sign up to donate. Overall, this organization has done a great job on Twitter raising awareness and inspiring people to donate. This is a disease that only gets worse as time goes by. Hopefully in the near future, we will be able to find a cure thanks to all of the awareness that is taking place. So many families would be grateful and it would be a huge accomplishment.
