Doctors with out Borders are a non-profit organization that sends doctors, primarily from the US, the UK, and Western Europe to third world or developing countries around the world that are in need of medical professionals usually during conflicts, epidemics, or natural disasters to not only provide help but to record and report the atrocities they see. Recently doctors with put Borders has been sending its doctors to Africa to help with the current outbreak of Ebola that started in the spring of 2014. During the Google hangout we spoke with Nick Owens who is the editorial and social media coordinator and Doctors without Borders in the UK he talks about the platforms which they are using currently, I thought it was interesting that of the 5 that they use (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and Tumblr) three of those are highly visual platforms. Doctors without Borders is not just using one platform to get their message out which is very smart, they know that not every one uses just Instagram or just Facebook, and that some people who are found on the less popular sites like Tumblr are not on the more popular sites. I also think that the fact that Nick Owens is not the only one working on this effort that more time can be put into the campaign and its post. The result is a better developed more rounded campaign that generates much ore engagement. Most of the non-profits we have talked to thus far have had very limited resources to dedicate to their social media engagement and you could really see it in their use of the platforms, but since Doctors without Borders has things such as professional photographers at their disposal they can create stunning and provocative visuals for their Instagram, Tumblr and Pinterest accounts.
