For this week’s discussion board, I decided to research one of my absolute favorite non-profit organizations called Susan G. Komen. I was initially going to write about them last week but then I realized that we needed a non-profit for this week and Susan G. Komen fits perfectly for that! Susan G Komen was started back in 1982 in Dallas, Texas to join the fight for breast cancer. I myself have been on the breach of developing this type of cancer but luckily it was benign and I had it surgically removed last spring. I feel the pain that these cancer patients and survivors go through. It was personally a big wake up call for me.
Furthermore, they have been able to strongly advocate the tough fight for breast cancer that can exist in women and men, too. They seem to be heavily involved in various different social media platforms and the biggest one would be Facebook and Twitter. Not only do they raise awareness via social media but through banks, different programs, and even national sports teams. I personally also have a debit card that is with Susan G Komen. Every time I swipe the card, 3% of my transaction is funded toward this amazing cause from the bank. I think they’re winning here! Moreover, they have about 90k followers on Twitter and 700,000 on Facebook. They currently have a big hash tag going on about #WWEMoms which is basically a partnership with WWE.
As we learned in the class lecture this week, Susan G Komen is definitely pinning and posting all across the board. They share photos on a daily on Facebook and there are various different pins on Pintrest that mention breast cancer and Susan G Komen. The only thing is that they have a Pintrest page; they don’t have an official Susan G Komen Instagram page. There are separate Instagram pages for different Susan G Komen branches across the globe. I think there should be a proper and official page for them.
One article that I came across called, ““Komen learns power of social media: Facebook, Twitter fueled fury, in which they were having social media issues was drowning in how many people were following them on Facebook due to an issue with Planned Parenthood Federation of America about withholding funds from the breast screenings. They were receiving critical comments that drew a lot of attention all over social media and “struck like a nerve”.
Another article that I came across was called “Susan G Komen flap spurred on by social media”. This article was a bit different than the first which mentioned Komen supporters still have more followers than Planned Parenthood does despite the changes they made in their policy.
